Biography

(a) One of the rarest animals in the world (Lepus-temperamentalus).
(b) Beast or Band.
(c) Dave “Rave” Ogilvie’s killer all-star recording project.
(d) A witch’s brew of Industrial, Pop and Rock all fronted by the sensational and gifted vocalist, Katie B.

Answer: All of the above.

Jakalope was first spawned in the creative mind of world-renowned producer and mixer, Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie). The Vancouver native brought the Jakalope to life in the spring of 2003. Ogilvie wanted to create an environment where artists he had previously worked with and whose talent he admired, could enter his world and contribute to a collective vision for a unique recording - a new kind of music with its genesis in the Industrial music (for which Ogilvie was most famous) but that progressed through searing rock to melodic pop. A daunting task but once the Jakalope was born, the project soon took tangible form. Ogilvie had made the acquaintance of a talented young vocalist, Katie B at Vancouver’s Warehouse recording studio. Looking to form a group involving the stunningly beautiful twenty-two year old singer, Ogilvie enlisted the help of Don Harrison, Don Binns and Don Short. “The three Dons” are best remembered as the crunching bottom-end of seminal Canadian rock band, Sons Of Freedom. Ogilvie next brought Anthony “Fu” Valcic into the Jakalope fold. As an artist, Valcic was a member of electronic pioneers Moev and as a producer/engineer/re-mixer/programmer, is well known for his work with Download, Skinny Puppy, Orgy, Staind, and Trapt. Word of this Frankenstein-ish assembly of talent filtered south of the border where Ogilvie’s good friend and mentor, Trent Reznor, caught wind of strange goings on in the Warehouse studio laboratory. Trent wanted in and began collaborating with Ogilvie, falling further into the Jakalope’s allure by first offering his brilliant producing, then songwriting and finally playing skills to the project. Soon other musicians and artists appeared at the control room door. As Ogilvie began to build it, they came. Guest artists for the project include Trent Reznor, Monster Magnet, Sloan, Kat Bjelland from Babes in Toyland, Thom D’arcy (Carnations), Phil Western, Malhavoc and many others.

Dave Ogilvie began his recording career in Vancouver working as an engineer at Mushroom Studios, producing for 54-40, The Grapes of Wrath, Moev and The Doughboys. But it was his work with Industrial pioneers Skinny Puppy that earned him international recognition. Dave is considered the band's fourth member, co-writing and playing guitar in addition to his production duties. Dave's ability to fuse Skinny Puppy’s signature sound of Industrial, Goth and Electronic music brought him to the attention of Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Ogilvie was enlisted to work on NIN’s 1994’s “March Of The Pigs” singles remix album. After forming his own label, Nothing Records, Trent selected Dave to co-produce Marilyn Manson's “Antichrist Superstar” which sold over one million copies. Dave has gone on to produce, mix and/or re-mix tracks for such artists as David Bowie, Motley Crue, Orgy, Spineshank, Skindive, Love Inc., Serial Joe, Copyright, Sloan and N.E.R.D.
